Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Shrubs 2–3 m tall.

Stems: Stems unbranched to few–branched, rounded to angular, pubescent with multicellular hairs or glabrate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite, borne on upper 3–5 nodes. Those leaves of a pair unequal, symmetrical or nearly so, broadly elliptic to elliptic, occasionally oblanceolate or ovate, (7.5–)10–25(–41) cm long, (2.8–)4–7(–13.5) cm wide. Apex acuminate to long-acuminate. Base cuneate. Upper surfaces sparsely hirtellous; lower surfaces moderately to sparsely velvety short–pilose, the veins sometimes densely so, or glabrate except sparsely puberulent on veins; blades firm–chartaceous. Margins serrate to serrulate. Veins slightly raised on both surfaces or occasionally slightly impressed on upper surface. Petioles 1.5–8(–11) cm long, base sometimes clasping the stem or perfoliate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers (2–)4–7(–9) in open umbelliform cymes arising in the leaf axils or occasionally on short side branches lower on stems, densely appressed pilose, occasionally the hairs spreading, peduncles 10–28 mm long, pedicels 8–19 mm long, peduncles and pedicels elongating slightly in fruit, bracts lanceolate to elliptic, distinct or occasionally connate, 9–22 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx 2–5(6)-lobed, nearly actinomorphic, white to pale green when fresh, 10–16 mm long, cleft to base, the lobes spatulate, sometimes narrowly so, sparsely to moderately pilose or occasionally with a few scattered hairs, rarely sparsely pilose in upper ⅔ within, apex rounded, deciduous or persistent in fruit. Corolla usually bilabiate, white, tube cylindrical, slightly curved, 14–15 mm long, ca. 4 mm in diameter, sparsely pilose to glabrate, upper lip 2-lobed, lower lip 3-lobed, the lobes imbricate in bud, upper lobes broadly rhombic, ca. 4–6 mm long, 4–8 mm wide, lower lobes very broadly elliptic, 5–7 mm long, 4–6 mm wide. Stamens 5, inserted about halfway up corolla tube, the 2 upper Stamens fertile, others staminodial, +/– with abortive anthers; fertile anthers coherent positioned in throat of corolla tube, dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits or occasionally by apical pores. Ovary superior, oblong–ovoid, 2-carpellate, 1-celled, placentation parietal, placentas 2, ± intruded, rarely joined in center and dividing ovary into 2 cells; ovules numerous, anatropous, glabrous, apex rounded or with a stylar beak; style 0–1 mm long, glabrous; stigma capitate, 2-lobed, lobes usually elliptic.

Fruit: Fruit a fleshy or firm berry; white; ovoid; ca. 1–1.5 cm long; often tipped by the persistent stylar beak. Seeds unknown.

Ploidy:
